More than the cold the difficulty with winter in Mongolia is all the smoke. The picture on the left is taken on a clear morning. The picture on the right may appear to be taken on a foggy morning, but it's not fog. In fact, the air is probably quite dry. That's smoke that obscuring your view. Sometimes the smoke is even worse than this.
Most of the smoke comes from families in the ger districts who burn coal for heat and cooking. Ulan Bator is in a valley, and the smoke can get trapped in the valley and sometimes linger for days.
